Reinscribing History through Docupoetry
This article explores documentary poetry, or docupoerty, as a method of counterstory. Emphasizing Don Mee Choi's 2020 DMZ Colony, I argue that docupoetry provides a methodology for writers of color to interviene in majoritarian narrivitization and construct their own identities within and against broader systemic and ideological frameworks. These constructions serve to resist totalizing narratives and invent avenues for transformational resistance and open up considerations of how other creative genres can serve as rhetorically rich methods of counterstory.
