A Novel Fast Synchronization Strategy for Primary Synchronization Signal in 5G New Radio Systems

Symbol timing synchronization is an essential component of the new radio (NR) system, which exhibits robustness, anti-frequency offsets, and high efficiency. Based on existing primary synchronization signal (PSS) timing synchronization algorithms and leveraging the inherent good cross-correlation properties of the primary synchronization signal, this paper proposes a PSS timing synchronization algorithm with lower time complexity and high resistance to frequency offsets. The proposed method utilizes a frequency domain fast synchronization approach based on the fast convolution and overlap-add methods, combined with pre-frequency offset processing, to perform joint estimation of symbol timing and coarse frequency offset. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm significantly enhances the performance of the synchronization algorithm in terms of resistance to frequency offsets and computational complexity, which has been reduced by 88.10%.
