Modern Effect Systems Overview
Effect systems allow one to reason statically about program effects. It helps a lot in building reliable software and clear code abstraction boundaries. However, proper effect system design is quite a challenging task. Only some mainstream programming languages adopt effect systems, and those attempts are considered too complicated or unusable. At the same time, many recent papers propose promising approaches to building flexible, safe, and lightweight effect systems. This paper aims to overview selected modern works on this topic to improve the awareness of practical programming language designers and implementors of most perspective solutions.
