Effect of Face Mask on Perception of Emotions During Covid-19 Pandemic

Objective. The study examined the effect of wearing a mask on others’ perception of the emotions of the person wearing it. Method. The sample consisted of 320 Kuwaiti male and female students from Kuwait University of both genders, whose ages ranged from 18-35 (M = 21.9, SD = 2.6). The sample was distributed into eight experimental groups, each with 40 participants, as follows: The first: males (who provided their responses to pictures of females without a mask); the second: males (who provided their responses to pictures of females with a mask); the third: females (who provided their responses to pictures of males with a mask on); the fourth: females (who provided their responses to pictures of males without a mask); the fifth: males (who provided their responses to pictures of males without a mask); the sixth: males (who provided their responses to pictures of males with a mask); the seventh: females (who provided their responses to pictures of females with a mask), and the eighth: females (who provided their responses to pictures of females without a mask). Facial expression images from the Facial Expression (FACES) database comprising six expressions (happiness, sadness, fear, anger, disgust, and neutral) were used. Results. There are statistically significant differences between the two groups with a mask and without a mask, in favor of the group without a mask in the perception of the emotions of disgust, fear, sadness, and happiness, and there are statistically significant differences in the perception of emotions attributable to the gender of the owner of the photo. Conclusion. Wearing a mask significantly affects the perception of emotions in the way we indicated.
