Effects of dietary intervention on sports performance in an athlete with leaky gut syndrome - a case study

This case study explores the impact of nutritional intervention on sports performance and intestinal health in a young athlete diagnosed with leaky gut syndrome. The primary objective was to evaluate changes in biological parameters associated with intestinal permeability, such as zonulin, vitamin D3, serum iron, and ferritin, following a personalized gluten- and dairy-free diet supplemented with functional foods and nutraceuticals. The study involved monitoring an 11-year-old performance athlete over a period of 2.5 years. The results indicated significant improvements in serum vitamin D3 levels and a steady reduction in fecal zonulin, suggesting improved intestinal permeability. Consistent increases in serum iron and pyruvate reflected optimization of nutritional and metabolic status, supporting more efficient physical recovery and enhanced athletic performance. This study demonstrates the crucial role of personalized dietary interventions in maintaining intestinal homeostasis and supporting the healthy development of young athletes.
