Energy saving, enhanced public safety, and improved quality of life with sensor based street lighting systems enabled by IoT technologies
Street lighting is vital for urban infrastructure, ensuring public safety, security, and aesthetic appeal. Traditional system s often face inefficiencies and limitations, failing to meet the dynamic needs of modern cities. Integrating sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies offer a transformative solution, modernizing and optimizing street lighting. This paper reviews recent advancements in sensor-based street lighting systems enabled by IoT. It explores the role of sensors and IoT platforms in revolutionizing street lighting, leading to smarter, more responsive solutions. The initial section highlights the significance of street lighting in urban environments and the challenges of traditional systems, such as energy inefficiency and inadequate responsiveness. The integration of sensors and IoT technologies is examined, showcasing their potential to optimize energy consumption, reduce operational costs, and enhance user experience. Practical implementations and case studies are analysed, providing insights into successful deployments and operational challenges. The paper concludes by examining the potential impact of sensor-based street lighting systems on urban environments. Benefits include substantial energy savings, reduced carbon emissions, enhanced public safety, and improved quality of life. However, challenges such as scalability, interoperability, data privacy, and security are also acknowledged.
