Security-constrained optimization framework for integrated active and reactive power optimization of transmission grid operation

As the energy transition and decarbonization require higher line utilization and optimization of the transmission grid, the challenges for transmission grid operation are increasing. Optimization problems to support decision-making in current-related congestion management or voltage control typically focus either on the optimization of active power-related degrees of freedom or on the optimization of reactive power-related degrees of freedom. In order to address the interactions arising in the context of increasing line utilization and more volatile power flows in the future, this paper presents an approach for an integrated optimization of current- and voltage-related congestions, considering interdependencies. In this paper, the integrated optimization is validated on a test grid derived from the IEEE 118 bus network and compared with a sequential run of a separate active power optimization and a subsequent reactive power optimization. The exemplary results show that, the integrated optimization will potentially identify more efficient and secure measures compared to the separate sequential optimization.
