Implementation of OOK and PPM Modulation with PRBS and BER for Optical Wireless Communication Using High-Speed FPGA
With the advancement of society, the need for high-speed communication networks also increases. Optical Communication is one way to achieve high speed and reliable communication. Optical Communication offers a higher bandwidth as compared to RF signals, and the usage of the RF spectrum requires a license whereas Optical communication is free to use. Optical Fiber communication does provide a higher data rate. Still, it is a tedious and expensive task to install and maintain the fiber connection, thus providing a way for optical wireless communication. In this paper, we discuss the implementation of different modulation techniques in Optical Wireless Communication by using a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to improve the reliability of the communication link while also obtaining a high data rate. A Pseudo Random Bit Sequence (PRBS) data is generated through the FPGA which is modulated to On-Off Keying (OOK) and Pulse Position Modulation (PPM) modulation, Laser diodes and LEDs are used to transmit the modulated data, and a PIN diode is used to receive the transmitted data, the reliability of the link is measured by calculating the Bit Error Rate (BER).
