A Geometric Morphological Analysis Method for Sediment Based on Dynamic Image Recognition

To precisely delineate the three-dimensional morphological features of sediment particles, this research has proposed a calculation approach for geometric morphological parameters of sediment particles based on dynamic image processing technology. This method has implemented the marking of trajectories of moving sediment particles using the Matlab programming language and computed the three-axis morphological parameters such as the long axis, median axis, and short axis of the particles, as well as the sphericity. The results indicated that the sediment particles in the source area of the Yangtze River are mainly composed of coarse sand, fine gravel, and medium gravel. These particles present remarkable irregularity in morphology, a distinct non-spherical tendency, and a preference for flattening and elongation in three-dimensional space. This study has overcome the limitation that traditional sediment geometric morphology analysis has to rely on direct physical measurement and has achieved a precise, efficient, and non-destructive quantitative description of the morphological characteristics of sediment particles.
