Shortcut on the Edge of the Cliff: An Overview of Artificial Intelligence for Higher Education

In recent decades, the influence of technological advancement has reached various domains including education. Accordingly, during these latest years, the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has become paramount in the domain of education. Responding to that situation, this article undertakes a systematic review to investigate the opportunity and risk of artificial intelligence use in education, especially in tertiary education context. To support the investigation, this study assembled a dataset of 22 published articles from 2019 to 2023 from the reputable research article database. Here, the study focused on the application of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly Chat GPT, in higher education. Based on the analysis, the results showed that Chat GPT use has both positive and negative effects on students and lecturers. The positive effects include the creation of educational content, personalized learning experiences, increased student engagement, and an enhanced learning environment. The negative effects included an increased risk of plagiarism, educational inequality, impact on human skills and interaction, and teacher-student dynamics. These findings provide important information for educational stakeholders and support the assessment and evaluation of AI use in academic activities.
