Enhancing DM/OTA/FOTA Systems Architecture for IOT using Collaborative Computing Paradigms Reference Architecture
The proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices has heightened the need for efficient and reliable Over-The-Air (OTA) and Firmware Over-The-Air (FOTA) systems for effective Device Management (DM). Our literature review revealed that most research primarily focuses on trust, security, and the delivery of software updates, with little or no emphasis on developing a complete architectural framework. This paper proposes an enhanced architecture for DM/OTA/FOTA, that leverages Collaborative Computing Paradigms (CCP) to optimize DM, OTA and FOTA processes in dynamic IoT environments. By integrating a unified resource pooling strategy, and dynamic distribution of data processing our architecture enhances operations. We explore the fluidity of computing across Edge, Fog, and Cloud paradigms, facilitating seamless firmware updates while ensuring scalability and extendability. Through real-world use cases, including automotive telematics, smart buildings and data center monitoring systems, we demonstrate the versatility and effectiveness of the proposed enhancement using the CCP-IOT-RA model of DM, OTA and FOTA systems. This work lays the groundwork for future research and applications in collaborative IoT architectures.
