Indonesia's RDE program: A multifaceted approach to nuclear energy development encompassing human Resource building, public acceptance, and technological innovation
Indonesia faces the challenge of balancing energy development with environmental conservation. The Experimental Power Reactor (RDE) symbolizes progress toward sustainable energy solutions, reducing reliance on fossil fuels while prioritizing environmental protection. Launched in 2014, the RDE project supports Indonesia's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060, using nuclear power as a key contributor. It focuses on small-scale High-Temperature Gas-cooled Reactors (HTGR) tailored to local needs, aiming to enhance community engagement and build nuclear expertise. The program includes detailed feasibility studies, site selection, international partnerships, and public outreach. Collaborations with organizations like Tsinghua University and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are vital for technical support and capacity building. The RDE highlights the importance of community involvement, strategic global alliances, and developing local expertise to advance nuclear energy in Indonesia. It provides a framework for integrating nuclear power into a broader green energy strategy, supporting regulatory reforms and public engagement. The RDE's approach combines technological innovation with socio-political awareness, positioning nuclear energy as a sustainable part of Indonesia's energy future. This initiative serves as a model for future projects, demonstrating Indonesia's dedication to sustainability and energy security.
