Implants and us – The path ahead

Periodontology has always been rooted in the principles of prevention and regeneration, and dental implantology represents the next frontier in achieving functional and esthetic rehabilitation for patients. So, now, it seems the time is most apt and opportune to address a pivotal shift in the landscape of periodontal care, i.e. the integration of dental implantology as a cornerstone of our discipline. The practice of dental implantology has evolved exponentially over the past two decades. What once seemed like a niche offering is now becoming a mainstream modality for tooth replacement. Technological advancements, including computer-guided implant placement, three-dimensional printing and bioactive materials, have revolutionized the predictability and success rates of implants. Moreover, the interplay between periodontology and implantology is undeniable. A strong foundation in periodontal health is critical for the long-term success of implants, while implants themselves offer unparalleled solutions for managing advanced periodontal disease cases. This synergy demands that periodontists lead the charge in advancing implant science and practice. At the Indian Society of Periodontology (ISP), we recognize that embracing dental implantology is not only an opportunity but also an obligation. As the field evolves, so too must our focus on research, education, and clinical excellence in this area. The ISP has taken significant strides in fostering innovation and academic rigor within dental implantology. Recognizing the need for robust research to guide clinical practice, the ISP, for the very first time has rolled out research scholarships for dental implant-based MDS dissertations last year. This one of its kind initiative, open to postgraduate students nationwide, aims to encourage young researchers to explore cutting-edge topics in implant science. With 32 grants sanctioned worth 45 lakhs approximately, this year, the number of grants to be supported is raised to 70, twice the size of the first batch. All relevant information is available on the official website of the society and I appeal to all members to make a big shout-out for the second call of ISP-implant research scholarships so that maximum MDS students with innovative research ideas may avail the benefits. This step marks a significant milestone for the society as we nurture the next generation of periodontists who will not only adopt but also advance the art and science of dental implants. The ISP’s efforts are not limited to research support. We are committed to integrating implantology into the broader framework of periodontal education and practice by organizing workshops and hands-on training programs to upskill practitioners. As we embrace dental implantology in a big way, our mission remains clear: to ensure that periodontists remain at the forefront of this transformative field. We envision a future where the lines between periodontology and implantology are seamlessly integrated, offering patients comprehensive care that restores both health and confidence. We invite all members of the ISP to join us on this journey. Let us innovate, educate, and collaborate to make dental implantology a shining example of what our profession can achieve. Together, we can build a legacy that defines the future of periodontology and beyond.

Abstract

Periodontology has always been rooted in the principles of prevention and regeneration, and dental implantology represents the next frontier in achieving functional and esthetic rehabilitation for patients. So, now, it seems the time is most apt and opportune to address a pivotal shift in the landscape of periodontal care, i.e. the integration of dental implantology as a cornerstone of our discipline. The practice of dental implantology has evolved exponentially over the past two decades. What once seemed like a niche offering is now becoming a mainstream modality for tooth replacement.
