ON THE ENTHALPY METHOD FOR SOLVING MOVING BOUNDARY PROBLEMS
This work demonstrates the use of the explicit enthalpy method to solve a two-dimensional ice-melting problem numerically. Such a method is a powerful approach to solving moving-boundary problems, including two-dimensional ones, and has a straightforward implementation using classical discretization techniques such as finite volumes and finite differences. The classic analytical solution for the one-dimensional water freezing problem, known as Neumann's solution, is used to verify the numerical solution of the enthalpy method. The verification demonstrates good agreement with the exact solution. To achieve the aim of this study, a two-dimensional ice-melting problem with periodic time-dependent boundary conditions is solved using the enthalpy method. The study highlights the importance of the enthalpy method in numerical simulation and its potential to solve complex phase-change problems.
