THE BURDEN OF DIABETIC FOOT: A GROWING CHALLENGE AND LOSS TO SOCIETY
Introduction: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a common and serious complication of diabetes mellitus, often leading to infections, amputations, and increased healthcare costs. This study aimed to evaluate the demographic, clinical, and ulcer-related characteristics in patients with DFUs at L.N. Medical College and J.K. Hospital, Bhopal. Methodology: A total of 100 patients aged 18 and above with diabetic foot ulcers were enrolled. Participants were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and data were collected on demographics, ulcer size, type, and duration. Ulcers were classied using the Wagner system, and clinical characteristics were assessed through detailed examinations. Follow-up was conducted for a minimum of 4 weeks. Results: The study found that the majority of participants were male (71%) and from rural areas (51%), with most falling in the 51-60 years age group (32%). The most common ulcer types were neuroischemic (47%) and neuropathic (43%), with trauma being the primary cause in 69% of cases. Most ulcers measured 1-5 cm in size, and 40% had been present for 1-3 months. The prevalence of complications such as neuropathy (86%), retinopathy (64%), and nephropathy (48%) was high. Discussion: The ndings underscore the critical role of early diagnosis, proper foot care, and lifestyle modication in preventing DFUs and their complications, particularly in rural and lower socioeconomic populations. Proactive management of diabetes and regular screening for foot problems are essential to reduce the risk of infection and amputations.
