USAGE OF GLIMEPIRIDE AND METFORMIN COMBINATION IN YOUNG ADULTS (BELOW 30 YEARS OF AGE) WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS IN INDIAN SETTINGS

Background: T2DM in young adults appears to be more resistant to the standard treatment options. The present study aimed to evaluate the approach of clinicians regarding the treatment pattern, dosage used, efcacy and safety of glimepiride and metformin xed drug combination (FDC) in the management of young adults with T2DM in Indian settings. Methods: A retrospective, multicenter, observational, survey-based questionnaire study was conducted with 100 healthcare professionals across various geographical locations of India who were prescribing glimepiride and metformin FDC in young adults with T2DM. Results:A total of 1136 patients with T2DM were included, with a median age of 28.3 years and males being predominant in the study population (72.0%). The majority of the population reported a family history of T2DM (77.5%) followed by hypertension (18.4%) and cardiovascular disease (13.3%). The strength of glimepiride 0.5 mg and metformin 500/1000 mg FDC was most widely prescribed in 47.0% of patients. Hypoglycemia was reported in 4.8% of patients. The majority of patients (95.1%) on glimepiride and metformin FDC did not observe weight gain. A signicant reduction in glycated hemoglobin, fasting plasma glucose, and postprandial plasma glucose levels was observed postglimepiride and metformin FDC treatment in both patients with and without dose titration. Physician global evaluation of efcacy (93.4%) and tolerability (93.0%) showed the majority of patients on a good to excellent scale. Conclusion: Multiple strengths of glimepiride and metformin FDC were benecial in young adults with T2DM. In addition, glimepiride and metformin FDCs were not associated with a risk of hypoglycemia and weight gain.
