The article outlines the main milestones in the creation and activities of the leading scientific institutions that were engaged in the study of books and book culture in Russia during the 20th and early 21st centuries (Petrograd Institute of Book Studies, Research Institute of Book Studies, Institute of Book, Document and Letter, Scientific Centre for Research on the History of Book Culture, Scientific and Publishing Centre «Nauka» of the RAS), traces their continuity, emphasizes the role of the Academy of Sciences.
