Systematic Literature Review of electric vehicles within the expansion planning of electrical power systems

The growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) has triggered a new paradigm in the energy sector, where electric mobility not only redefines the way we move, but also creates significant opportunities for synergistic integration with power systems expansion planning. However, this transition also brings challenges for the energy system, as the additional load from EVs can overload the existing electrical infrastructure and also require additional energy sources. This research carries out a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) focusing on the insertion of EV in the expansion planning of the electrical system. The articles are categorized according to the main research themes, including aspects of planning, smart charging, renewable sources, and techno-economic considerations. Furthermore, a more in-depth analysis of the articles is conducted on the problems addressed, neglected topics, and data such as the paper's origin, publication year, and keywords. In addition, this work highlights research gaps, such as incorporating the necessary costs to adapt a charging system into a smart one within expansion planning, and accounting for the impacts on battery lifespan when using Vehicle-To-Grid (V2G) scheme. • Comprehensive review of electric vehicles within the expansion planning of electrical power systems. • This review covers 140 recent articles on the subject, selected via the Systematic Literature Review methodology. • The works are grouped into categories, including planning, smart charging, renewable sources, and techno-economic aspects. • In-depth analysis of key topics, research gaps, and article specific data such as origin, publication year and keywords.
