Study on Ultra Narrowband (UNB) and Long Range WAN (LoRaWAN) Communication Technology for Smart Street Light (SSL) System in Malaysia Power Utility
Street lighting plays a vital role in improving visibility for road users and residents, aiding in the prevention of traffic accidents and reducing crime, thereby fostering safer communities. Despite its importance, managing street lighting efficiently remains a persistent challenge. Smart Street Lighting (SSL) systems address this issue by incorporating communication technologies for real-time monitoring and control. These systems are known for their ability to lower maintenance costs while promoting environmental sustainability, especially in the Malaysian context. Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), through its research arm, TNB Research (TNBR), has conducted a feasibility study to evaluate the compatibility of Ultra Narrowband (UNB) and Long Range WAN (LoRa W AN) technologies in SSL systems. The study also explores the benefits of energy-efficient LED lighting for improved light intensity. SSL systems were implemented on a limited scale and tested in selected Malaysian locations. This paper examines the technical performance and compatibility of SSL systems utilizing UNB and LoRa W Antechnologies.
