Centralized Protection and Control (CPC): Advanced Protection Relay for Equipment Planning & Asset Management

This paper is prepared to describe the Centralized Protection and Control (CPC) as advanced protection relay in supporting equipment planning and asset management. This paper is prepared with the intent to share about current industry challenges, for the equipment planning and asset management specifically for protection relay. CPC brings new values to the existing protection relay technologies in terms of centralizing and advancing protection relay. In addition to that by centralizing the protection relay, it changes the previous design of layout of protection relay. By having CPC, protection relay can be separated for the switchboard and monitor all the protection devices in one system. The evolution of protection relay from electromechanical relay to CPC and landscape of CPC in the world and Malaysia also briefly described in this paper. CPC successfully completed the pilot project in one of processing plant in Malaysia. The outcomes from the CPC pilot elevate and proven functionality of the common protection relay with centralized features and reduce the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) hassle in terms of testing and functionality of the common or existing protection relay. thus, supporting the reduction of operational costs in any
