Design of a Modified I Shaped Reconfigurable Patch Antenna for Multiband Applications

Compact modified I shaped reconfigurable patch antenna is designed for multiband applications. Square split rings are augmented to the rectangular microstrip antenna to enhance the performance of the antenna. Three PIN diodes with different switching states are actuated for producing reconfigurable resonant bands. The SRR antenna with all the diodes OFF produced a wide band resonance with a bandwidth of 700 MHz and the ring resonator is responsible for this wide resonance. Eleven reconfigurable bands are produced by the modified I shaped patch for different switching states of the three PIN diodes. The antenna produced a maximum gain of 3.98dB when all the diodes were ON and a minimum gain of 1.46dB when all the diodes were OFF which indicates that losses associated with the diodes are less. Four 5G NR reconfigurable bands such as N38, N79, N46 and N48 are obtained for the first three switching cases of the diodes. Seven reconfigurable bands suitable for earth exploration, meteorological satellite, radionavigation, maritime and aeronautical mobile, broadcasting and international broadcast stations is obtained for the switching conditions of all the three diodes.
