WingDCN: AWGR-Based Multi-Wavelength Routing Switch for Data Center Networks

In this paper, we propose an optical switching solution based on arrayed waveguide grating routers (AWGRs) for multi-wavelength routing in data centers. Tunable wavelength converters (TWCs) and AWGRs are utilized for providing wavelength routing. We present two solutions, CS (Centralized Scheduling)-WingDCN and DS (Distributed Scheduling)-WingDCN. Based on Clos topology, CS-WingDCN can provide multiple paths for each traffic and, combined with our designed linear programming and lowest contention probability first (LCF) scheduling algorithms, achieves good throughput performance. Although not having the multi-path feature of CS-WingDCN, DS-WingDCN benefits from a distributed scheduling mechanism, which makes the scheduling complexity of each scheduler very low, allowing it to complete scheduling calculations in a very short time even with a large network size. Based on simulation results, our proposed CS-WingDCN can achieve low latency and high throughput for small-scale networks and DS-WingDCN can interconnect 32768 nodes while providing relatively low latency and high throughput.
