Analytical Modeling of High-Power Converters: An Approach for Stability Analysis of HVdc, FACTS, and Wind Power Delivery Systems

Analytical modeling of converters for FACTS, HVdc, and wind generators in power transmission systems complements detailed EMT simulation and expedites system dynamic studies. It also facilitates parametric studies, and a good example of model use is eigenvalue analysis, which provides fast and comprehensive stability examination and controller design. Another example of model use is the frequency-domain analysis and wider analysis using open-loop block diagrams. This application can lead to more granular examination of control interactions. On the other hand, analytical model building requires key steps and technologies, such as setting up subsystem dynamic equations, carrying out coordinate frame transformation, making an overall interconnected system, and validation. This paper offers a critical review on those technologies and presents several examples (MMC-HVDC, SVC, and wind generators) to demonstrate the key methods as well as the outcomes that help dynamic and stability analysis.
