L’onomastique et ses rôles dans la construction identitaire des personnages

The analysis of names is an effective tool for examining the identity of a character, thereby enabling a deeper understanding of the charactersand themes. Names can reveal fundamental elements of a character's identity, heritage, and destiny. This study explores the significance of names through the literary works of Calixthe Beyala, Ananda Devi, and Tahar Ben Jelloun. Using Philippe Hamon's semiotics of characters (1977), we address the following key question: To what extent can a name, whether a specific one or a pseudonym, be considered part of a character's identity? We will answer these questions by discussing the narrative implications of names, pseudonyms as a means of character aliasing, and the transition from anonymity to onomastic androgyny. Ultimately, we demonstrate that onomastics influences human destiny. It conveys and enhances understanding of the cultural and historical values ofthe societies to which the characters belong, and it reveals the individual identity of the characters.KEYWORDS:Onomastics -Identity -Character -Semiotics –Name.
