Spectroscopic Measurements of Medium Voltage Sparking in Air
This study explores a non-invasive method for recording and analysing sparks and arcs in medium voltage electrical systems. Using a high-resolution optical emission spectrograph, light from a steady high-frequency spark is measured and analysed. This approach revealed specific atomic emission lines from the air that may be found when sparks occur in practical scenarios, allowing for the estimation of minimum and maximum energy dispersion values of 1,520 kJ/mol and 3,388 kJ/mol, respectively. While current limitations in light intensity prevent direct energy measurements, the methodology provides a foundational step toward more precise assessments. Future improvements, including higher voltages and a broader range of electrode materials like copper and aluminium, have the potential to refine these techniques further. This will enable advanced energy analytical methods, such as blackbody radiation and Boltzmann line measurements, offering a more comprehensive analysis of sparking events in electrical equipment.
