Microstrip Patch Antenna for 5G Mobile and mmWave Band at 30 GHz

This paper addresses the design and optimization of a microstrip patch antenna for 5G mobile communication, specifically within the millimetre-wave (mmWave) band at 30 GHz. With increasing demands for compact, high-performance antennas that provide faster data transfer, low latency; the key problem centres on developing an antenna capable of meeting these stringent 5G requirements, such as improved directivity, gain, VSWR, bandwidth, and return loss, while maintaining compactness suitable for modern mobile devices. Various configurations, from single patch to multi-element array designs, were examined using simulations in CST Studio Suite. Findings indicate that multi-element arrays significantly enhance performance metrics, with the 4-element linear array achieving the highest gain (13.4 dB) and directivity (13.7 dB), making it suitable for applications requiring focused radiation. Meanwhile, the 4-element planar array, with broader aperture and symmetrical coverage, supports applications needing balanced radiation. The proposed designs meet ITU standards for high-frequency applications, demonstrating the feasibility of optimized microstrip antennas in 5G mmWave systems.
