An Analytical Reliability Assessment for 5G Multi-User Massive MIMO Communication Systems

In a Massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) communication system, how many antennas should be installed at the Base Station (BS) to achieve the desired spectral efficiencies for cellular networks? This question has received great attention during the last decade and various literatures have provided exact ad rigorous mathematical formulations to compute different types of efficiencies. In this work we focus on how many BS antennas should be implemented to achieve the required spectral efficiencies as well as bit error rates for a user in the 5G and Beyond 5G mobile networks. The objective of this paper is to achieve high reliability of the 5G systems. To address our research problem, we consider a practical linear receiver such as Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) that processes exact and inexact channel estimates and the Rayleigh fading environment is assumed. An error performance analysis is carried out based on mathematical formulations for both MPSK and MQAM modulation techniques. Matlab R2018 is used to simulate all derived formulations and simulation results in terms of the number of BS antennas required to achieve the desired BER for the MMSE uplink receiver and modulation scheme are illustrated.
