Lagrange Multiplier Selection for Rate–Distortion Optimization in Multi-scalable Video Coding

Video coding plays a crucial role in preserving the quality of delivered videos.Creating and analyzing robust video coding requires significant effort because of numerous losses and delays caused by network congestion during video transmission.Congestion control is employed to mitigate these issues. One approach, source-based rate control, involves modeling to determine the Lagrange multiplier. Here, we propose a method to identify the optimal Lagrange multiplier for application in High Efficiency Video Coding with multi-scalability, encompassing spatial, signal-to-noise, and temporal scalabilities.By employing intra-and inter-modes in the coding process, we aim to make Lagrange optimization more comprehensive, addressing the motion processes meticulously between video frames. An optimal Lagrange multiplier reduces transmission rates while maintaining video frame quality and achieving high efficiency in multi-scalable video coding. From the results of experiments using video tests in Standard Definition (SD), Common Intermediate Format (CIF), and High-Definition (HD) formats on differences in factor rate-distortion performance between default (original) optimization and proposed (test) indicate an increase in the BD-rate by 32.52%, surpassing the previous improvement compared to the standard Lagrange multiplier.
