Stability of grid forming converters under electromechanical restrictions

In this paper, the large signal stability of a grid-forming wind power generation system is analyzed. The conventional methodology of power curves is applied to the grid-forming inverter, incorporating the effects of virtual impedance and current limitations. It is demonstrated that maintaining ideal grid-side performance during a grid voltage phase jump is not feasible when reasonable restrictions are placed on the dynamics of generator power. Simulations show how additional energy storage in the DC link may stabilize the system without compromising grid- or generator-side dynamics.

Abstract

In this paper, the large signal stability of a grid-forming wind power generation system is analyzed. The conventional methodology of power curves is applied to the grid-forming inverter, incorporating the effects of virtual impedance and current limitations. It is demonstrated that maintaining ideal grid-side performance during a grid voltage phase jump is not feasible when reasonable restrictions are placed on the dynamics of generator power. Simulations show how additional energy storage in the DC link may stabilize the system without compromising grid- or generator-side dynamics.
