Comparative analysis of grid-forming and grid-following control for DFIG

TheDoubly-Fed Induction Generator(DFIG) has become a key technology in wind energy generation due to its ability to generate electricity at nominal frequency across various rotational speeds. Traditionally,Grid-Following(GFL) vector control has been used to control the DFIG, but the increasing integration of renewables has presented new challenges.Grid-Forming(GFM) control techniques have been proposed to address these issues, though their application in DFIG systems is still underexplored. This study examines the effects of implementing GFM control in both theMachine Side Converter(MSC) andGrid Side Converter(GSC) of DFIG systems, focusing on their interactions and impact on system stability. Additionally, a novel MSC control structure is introduced to enhance GFM management. The research aims to guide the integration of GFM into DFIG systems, improving performance in the evolving energy landscape.
