Lean supported digital education : Developing a pull digital education strategy

The illusion of digital prosperity takes its toll in digital education and in productivity. There is clear proof that education is flooded with digital tools, including both hardware and software, but the effectiveness of transferring Computer Science knowledge remains low, as does the productivity of end-users. Our research reveals that one of the reasons for this contradiction is that digital education follows the principles of push production systems, where the focus is on the tools and on trying to build up huge knowledge inventories. We argue that digital education should adapt the values of pull production systems, which are centered around human beings – students and teachers in a consumer role. Furthermore, we have also found that the principles, methods, and tools of push production systems can be viewed and adapted when it is appropriate to increase both flow and resource efficiency in the form of selecting suitable, meaningful, real-world tasks and teaching only those tools which are required to solve these problems by highlighting the fundamental concepts of computer science.
