Socio-Environmental Analysis in the Nigua Basin: Foundations For the Integrated Management of Its Natural Resourcesenglish Title

Objective: This work analyzes the Nigua River basin, located in the province of San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic, highlighting its socio-environmental and historical relevance. Theoretical Framework: The research analyzes key studies from the last decade on the Nigua basin, focusing on land use, ecosystem services, climate change and governance. It proposes a comprehensive approach that includes the restoration of degraded areas, sustainable agriculture, mining regulation and strengthening governance. It also highlights the importance of involving local communities, promoting environmental education and environmental education. Method: The evaluation of the surface environment of the basin was carried out qualitatively through field work, satellite images and processing tools. Base cartography from the Ministry of the Environment and the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources was used. To evaluate the environmental condition of the Nigua River basin, the DPSIR (Drivers, Pressures, States, Impacts, Responses) model was applied, analyzing environmental problems from five aspects: driving force, pressure, state, impact and response. Results and Discussion: The basin, known for its biodiversity and cultural wealth, faces significant environmental challenges such as deforestation, water pollution, soil erosion and indiscriminate extraction of construction materials. Through a comprehensive diagnosis, problems were identified in the management of its natural resources and the lack of a sustainable comprehensive management model. Research Implications: It is emphasized that the comprehensive management of the Nigua basin is essential to preserve its ecological integrity, ensure equitable access to water and guarantee the well-being of dependent communities. Originality/Value: This research analyzed the natural resources of the Nigua basin, seeking to promote social well-being and support sustainable economic development.
