A Semiotic Analysis of Billboards in Islamabad's I-8 Markaz: Exploring Visual Communication and Cultural Representation
This study explores the semiotic pragmatics of billboard advertisements, focusing on the ways in which signs and symbols are used to manipulate consumer behavior. Drawing on Roland Barthes' semiotic approach, the research decodes the linguistic, visual, contextual, and mythical elements embedded in billboard advertisements. The analysis examines how advertisers use various signs, including celebrity endorsements, colors, and cultural symbols, to construct persuasive messages that resonate with consumers. By categorizing billboards as a form of outdoor advertisement, the study investigates how these advertisements convey meanings that go beyond the literal, incorporating social, cultural, and ideological inferences. The study is based on food and grocery billboards displayed in the I-8 sector of Islamabad, with findings showing that advertisers strategically utilize these semiotic tools to manipulate audience perceptions and influence purchasing decisions. The research emphasizes how myths, reinforced through repetition, become perceived as natural truths, guiding consumer choices. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how advertising in urban spaces leverages semiotic strategies to shape consumer identities and behaviors.
