A PLACA OBTURADORA COMO SUPORTE A ALIMENTAÇÃO DE RECÉM-NASCIDO COM FENDA LABIOPALATINA: RELATO DE CASO

Cleft lip and palate is an inadequate formation in the orofacial region that compromises basic physiological functions of the newborn, one of which is the nutritional function that is intrinsically linked to the growth and development of a child. Even when breastfeeding is difficult, exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life is a priority, even if it is being impaired by the cleft. Thus, the flexible obturator plate is a resource that can be used to restore physiological functions such as chewing, swallowing and speech production. Therefore, the objective of the study is to describe a case report on the support of the obturator plate for breastfeeding of a newborn with cleft lip and palate. This is a qualitative case report study with a descriptive approach, carried out from November 2024 to February 2025, based on the records of the multidisciplinary team contained in the patient's electronic medical record, while the Newborn (NB) was being monitored in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The analysis of the information was done by selecting the collected material and providing a detailed description of the case. The preparation by the care team and the use of the palatal obturator plate by the newborn was essential to balance the physiological and nutritional demands of breastfeeding, as well as to establish the maternal bond. The relevance of the multidisciplinary team in the care of the newborn was observed. Thus, the benefits of using palatal prostheses to establish breastfeeding, weight gain, reduction of hospitalization time and for child growth and development are noted.
