HISTOMORPHOLOGICAL CORRELATION IN FINDINGS OF TRANSURETHRAL RESECTION OF PROSTATE AND PROSTATE BIOPSY WITH SERUM PROSTATE SPECIFIC ANTIGEN IN BENIGN PROSTATIC HYPERPLASIA
Prostatic specific antigen is a glycoprotein produced by epithelial cells of prostate and has normal values ranging from 0-4 ng/ml, which in disease processes like hyperplasia, inflammation, tumors, granulomatous prostatitis maybe released in the serum of the patient due to breach of prostatic layers between the lumen and capillaries.(7,8).The prostate produces and secretes into the semen and the bloodstream Prostate specific antigen (PSA), a 30kDa serine protease. The gene for PSA has two androgen response element .Elevated serum PSA levels are seen in hyperplasia, and prostatitis and prostatic carcinoma.(11) The combination of Digital rectal examination (DRE), TRUS, & Serum PSAlevels is a powerful diagnostic tool for both benign and malignant lesions.(13) On a global scale, diseases of the prostate gland cause significant morbidity and mortality amongst adult males particularly over 60 years of age.
