Correlations between PMI and IC Indices, and probability of 10-year osteoporotic fracture risk estimated using the FRAX BMI calculator

Introduction and Objective.Osteoporosis is a chronic skeletal disease the significance of which is growing due to the aging of the population. In the diagnostics of this condition, the assessment of bone mineral density plays a crucial role, as well as tools, such as the FRAX calculator, which allows estimation of osteoporotic fracture risk.Available literature suggests that radiomorphometric indices of the mandible may be useful in identifying patients at risk of osteoporosis. The Aim of the study was to assess the correlation between mandibular radiomorphometric indices (PMI and IC) and the risk of osteoporotic fractures, estimated using the FRAX BMI calculator.Materials and Method. The study covered a group of 422 patients aged between 40-89, who reported for treatment at the Clinical Dental Centre in Lublin.Research analysis included radiomorphometric parameters (PMI and IC).A diagnostic survey was conducted to assess the 10-year probability of major osteoporotic and hip fractures using the FRAX BMI tool.Clinical data obtained and the results of the measurements using panoramic software were described in the tables and statistically analyzed.Results.The results showed a weak; however, significant correlation between the 10-year risk of osteoporotic fractures and the PMI index, especially in women. As the PMI increased, the fracture risk decreased, particularly on the left side.Similar results were observed for hip fractures, where PMI and IC were significantly correlated with lower risk in women and across the entire patient group.
