Nutrient Potential of two Perennial Leafy Vegetables: Moringa oleifera and Sweet manihot esculenta

Cte d'Ivoire is faced with the burden of malnutrition, a sustainable solution to which could involve the use of leafy vegetables. It is in this context that the present work aims to evaluate the nutritional potential of two perennial leafy vegetables composed of Moringa oleifera and Manihot esculenta with a view to the sustainable and preventive management of rampant malnutrition. The nutritional values of these leafy vegetables were calculated in accordance with standard methods.Analysis of variance with a classification criterion at the 5% threshold was carried out to assess the significant difference in the means relative to the nutrient values using Statistical version 7.1 software. The results for Manihot esculenta and Moringa oleifera were as follows: moisture (70.51; 66.26 3.26), protein (26.120.18%;29.09 0.11%), carbohydrate (14.371.3%;14.89 0.01%), lipid (6.80.13%;5.93 0.31%), dietary fibre (43.20.51%,43.831.53%),ash (9.50.67%;9.50.67%),polyphenols (375.54.78;3814.24mg EAG/ g DM), flavonoids (283 78 3.9mg EQ/ g DM; 283 1.41 mg EQ/ g DM) and energy value (283 78 3.9 kcal/100g; 171.964.29 kcal/100g; 173.75 0.01 kcal/100g).Given the nutritional value of the leafy vegetables studied, they deserve to be promoted and popularized with a view to guaranteeing sustainable, daily nutritional cover. However, further studies are needed to assess the nutritional contribution of the leafy vegetables studied in combination with other foods.
