Sustainability in Banana Production As A Strategy For Global Competitiveness in the Janaúba-MG Region

Objective: This study aims to identify whether banana producers in the Janaúba region implement waste management techniques in banana cultivation and to examine the role of producer associations in disseminating knowledge about business sustainability. Theoretical Framework: Sustainable food production is a global demand, and the circular economy can provide competitive advantages. Banana cultivation generates a significant amount of organic waste, which, if not properly managed, can result in environmental and phytosanitary issues. Understanding how producers deal with this waste and promoting sustainable practices are key to improving the sector’s competitiveness. Method: The study employed a qualitative and descriptive approach, conducting a case study with participatory research. Semi-structured interviews were applied to ten banana producers in the Gorutuba Valley, Janaúba, Northern Minas Gerais. The research assessed the extent to which sustainability practices are adopted and how producer associations contribute to this process. Results and Discussion: The findings indicate that ABANORTE plays a crucial role in training producers and adding value to banana production, facilitating market access, including international markets. While producers are aware of sustainability concepts, their adoption remains limited. Most reported reusing banana waste as organic matter, but no advanced reuse techniques have been developed. This suggests an opportunity to further explore sustainable solutions for banana cultivation. Research Implications: The study highlights the importance of integrating banana producers into sustainability networks and optimizing waste management practices to enhance competitiveness. Originality: Although sustainable banana cultivation has been widely discussed, little research has been conducted on waste management in the Janaúba region. Understanding these aspects can promote technological innovations and economic sustainability for banana producers.
