A retrospective analysis of the outcomes of orbital implantation in patients with anophthalmos
Purpose. An analysis of the outcomes of surgical treatment with formation of a mobile stump for an eye prosthesis in the long term. Methods. The retrospective study included 43 patients operated using various orbital implants in the period from 2017 to 2021 with various eye pathologies. Depending on the implant material, 2 study groups were formed. Statistical processing of the obtained data was carried out. Results and discussion. As a part of retrospective study, an analysis of the complications of orbital implantation that required surgical correction was performed. In 60 % of cases, complications occurred in the first group with the implantation of a synthetic insert. Complications such as inversion or eversion of the lower eyelid and ptosis were equally common in both groups. Exposure of orbital implants was observed in 14 % of cases, and rejection of orbital inserts with their removal was noted in 9 %. The most common complication was retraction of the prosthesis which occurred in 28 % of cases. Conclusion. Based on data analysis from a retrospective study, a conclusion can be made that the use of implantation material of a porous structure, mainly of allogenic origin, contributes to the formation of a more reliable supporting stump for an eye prosthesis. Key words: enucleation, ptosis, inversion of the lower eyelid.
