IMPACTO DO TABAGISMO NA OSSEOINTEGRAÇÃO DE IMPLANTES DENTÁRIOS

Smoking is one of the main causes that affect the success of dental implants, also in a very direct way, affecting the osseointegration process. Furthermore, this study aims to conduct an integrative review of the literature on the main impacts of smoking on the osseointegration of dental implants. For this, the following electronic databases were used: U.S. National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Cochrane Library, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS); in addition, Google Scholar, an electronic library of scientific articles and academic papers from the gray literature, was used in order to search and identify studies that answered the guiding question of this integrative literature review. Then, the researchers selected the papers with analysis in the title and abstract, based on the eligibility criteria. The eligibility criteria were as follows: articles published in English, Portuguese and Spanish; case reports; laboratory research, randomized or non- randomized clinical trials, articles that are appropriate to the theme. The results of this review show that smoking is directly associated with a higher risk of failure in the osseointegration of dental implants, in addition to contributing to marginal bone loss and the development of peri- implant diseases. It was observed that the severity of the impacts increases proportionally to the number of cigarettes smoked daily. Therefore, smoking cessation is a crucial factor for the success of implants, and it is essential that oral health professionals guide and monitor patients who smoke to minimize risks and improve clinical prognoses.
