The Empowering Kitchen: Women, Cooking, and the Environment in Egypt
Abstract This paper explores the relation between women, community kitchens, and climate change. Community kitchens in Egypt have mushroomed in recent years. Most of them are run by women. These kitchens have shown diverse ways of addressing climate change through local sourcing, seasonal menus, reducing food waste, etc. They have also helped in preserving the Egyptian culinary heritage by collecting traditional recipes, organising training workshops on traditional local cuisine, and outsourcing to the community. Women have played a significant role in adapting to climate change. By raising their awareness of the impact of climate change upon their immediate ecosystem and enhancing their capacities to deal with it, women develop a more resilient and creative approach to the global warming crisis.
