Numerical simulation of the formation of the Fantangisña serpentinite mud volcano in the forearc of the Mariana Arc

<p indent="0mm"> The serpentinite mud volcanoes in the forearc of the Mariana Arc serve as direct windows to comprehend the process of plate subduction. In order to understand the dynamic process of the formation of this type of mud volcanoe, a numerical model of the formation dynamics has been established specifically for the Fantangisña serpentinite mud volcano. The simulation results suggest that the mud slurry for the Fantangisña mud volcano is derived from a sourec region approximately 8.4 km in depth, underlying an about 4 km thick serpentinized mantle, with the pressure of about 1.91×107 Pa. The mud slurry is migrated through a migration channel with the radius of about 1.12 m at the average flow velocity of approximately 66.00×104 m3/a, and the cumulative eruption activity time of about 210 kys accounting for 2.0% of the total existence time of the Fantangisña serpentinite mud volcano. The computational results presented in this paper provide foundational data for investigating the serpentinization features of the upper mantle in deep part of the Mariana Arc′s forearc region and enhance the understanding for the formation dynamics of serpentinite mud volcanoes in this area.
