Ultrathin Huygens’ Metasurfaces Based on Induced Magnetism and Their Metalens Applications
This paper reviews a series of studies about Huygens’ metasurfaces based on the induced magnetism and their potential applications in planar lens antennas. The induced magnetism is able to utilize the double-layer dislocated metallic patterns on a single-layer PCB substrate to excite the magnetic resonance and hence the Huygens’ resonance, which breaks through the phase-shifting limitation of the conventional frequency-selective surfaces in terms of EM wave manipulation. It paves the way for efficient transmitted-wave manipulation on the very simple metasurfaces. Potential applications of Huygens’ metasurfaces include single-polarized, dual-polarized, dual-band, low-profile, and transmissive/reflective bifunctional metalens antenna designs. Since it can be prepared using a single-layer PCB substrate which make the fabrication much easier and lower cost, the Huygens’ metasurfaces based on the induced magnetism have important applications for future antenna engineering.
