Core Loss Analysis in Power Transformers: A Finite Element Method Approach Considering Voltage Harmonics Impact

This study presents an investigation into the impacts of voltage harmonics on the core losses of power transformers. Both the finite element method (FEM) and the conventional method of calculating core losses using the Specific No Load Loss (SNLL) curve were applied. The core losses were analyzed under conditions of 0% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and 7.83% THD of voltage applied to the primary winding. The results were compared to evaluate the additional losses induced by harmonics. The findings indicate that harmonics can lead to significant extra losses in the core, resulting in temperature rise and reduced lifespan of transformers. Therefore, it is crucial to consider harmonics in the design process of transformers to ensure their reliability and longevity.
