Enhanced Bandwidth and Gain of a Patch Antenna Using Metasurface

In this paper, a bandwidth and gain enhanced antenna realized by nonuniform metasurface was proposed. Firstly, a slotted patch with corner-cut was employed as the initial antenna. Then, to further enhance the radiated properties, squared corner-cut patches were arranged around the initial antenna, forming nonuniform metasurface. As simulations demonstrated, compared with the initial antenna, two additional resonant frequencies are generated, resulting in a wide S 11 bandwidth ranging $4.45-6.5 \mathrm{GHz}$. Moreover, the axial ratio values broke the 3 dB line to a ranged bandwidth of $4.85-5.3 \mathrm{GHz}$, and the gain has an averaged 3dB improvement, which the peak gain reaches 11.3dBic. Moreover, the radiation pattern exhibits a low cross-polarization of less than 25 dB, occurred at 5.05 GHz. Finally, through the simulated verification, the novel design utilized the non-uniform metasurface achieved the bandwidth and gain significantly enhanced, providing a novel approach to the radiation properties enhancement. The proposed antenna can also apply to the civilian communication, point-to-point communication, and the radar system, owing to its excellent properties.
