Impacts of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations on the Capacity of Distribution Transformers

In this study, some impacts of the significant paradigm shift created by increasing e-mobility applications on existing energy systems are discussed. The main purpose of the study is to examine the increasing capacity problems due to electric vehicle charging station loads on the network from the perspective of transformer loadings and to offer possible solutions. In the test environment created using the MATLAB Simulink software, DC fast charging stations were integrated into an urban medium voltage feeder that feeds consumers with different characteristics. The simulations include cases where charging stations are connected to the grid and when they are not. Analysis results show that in scenarios where charging stations are active, transformer loads increase significantly and current capacity limits are exceeded. This situation necessitates costly infrastructure improvements due to overloading of transformers, risks grid operation security and negatively affects supply continuity. To solve these problems, different consumption strategies were examined and the results were shared.
