Performance Analysis of a MIMO Channel Simulator for Smart Grid Communications

5G Communication technologies are crucial realising the potential benefits of smart grids (SG), enabling real-time communication between electric utilities, their devices and customers on the network. Massive multiple input multiple output communication (MIMO) is a key technique in 5G, enhancing energy efficiency and high data rates communication. However, it is imperative to have accurate and realistic channel models for effective MIMO communication; this complicated task is achieved using MIMO channel simulators. Thus, the MIMO simulator reproduces the statistical properties of the non-realizable reference model with sufficient accuracy while keeping complexity very low. Nevertheless, designing accurate and efficient MIMO channel simulators is often challenging. This paper examines the theoretical performance of the MIMO channel simulator in an isotropic environment using both existing and newly modified parameterisation methods. The existing methods include the Extended Method of Exact Doppler Spread (EMEDS) and the Modified Method of Equal Area (MMEA). The new improved methods are Modified Extended Method of Exact Doppler Spread (MEMEDS) and the New Modified Method of Equal Area (NMMEA). Theoretical performance evaluations of the MIMO channel simulator using this conventional and enhanced methods are investigated.
