Frequency Selective Surface-based EM-Shields for Wideband and Ultrawideband Applications

In this paper, single-layered polarization-insensitive frequency selective surface (FSS) based electromagnetic shields are presented. The FSS unit cell consists of a modified cross with a circular loop at the center designed over a low-profile dielectric. The shields offer electromagnetic shielding both in the X - and Ku-bands. These FSS shields manifest polarization-insensitive and angularly stable wideband responses, owing to the fourfold structural symmetry. Moreover, the shields accomplish virtuous fractional bandwidths for the transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarization modes and can be employed for wideband or ultrawideband shielding applications.
