Synchronizing Communication Networks in Smart Grids and Microgrids: Overcoming Challenges with Resilience and Survivability
The emergence of smart grids and microgrids, driven by the integration of distributed energy resources, renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems, has initiated a transformative shift in the power industry. The intelligence of these advanced grids hinges on the seamless integration of information and communication technologies (ICT) with the power network, highlighting the increasing importance of robust ICT infrastructure. As smart grids and microgrids continue to evolve, the synchronization of communication networks becomes critical, particularly in addressing resilience and survivability challenges. This article examines the telecommunications requirements crucial for various subsystems within smart grids and microgrids, focusing on the obstacles faced in smart distribution networks. It proposes strategies to overcome these challenges, emphasizing the necessity of resilience and survivability in communication networks. Additionally, the article underscores the importance of developing and implementing best practices and operational guidelines tailored to the specific needs of distribution companies, considering technical, operational, geographical, and customer-centric factors. The insights presented aim to facilitate the creation of telecommunications strategies that enhance the reliability and efficiency of smart grids and microgrids.
