Exploring the Impact of Flat Icons and 3D Icons on User Experience and Aesthetics in Digital Interface
For a considerable amount of time, there has been a continuous and unresolved argument between skeuomorphic and flat designs. This is partly because empirical data proving the superiority of one icon type over the other from understanding and aesthetic viewpoints is required. To determine which icon style produces the most effective visual search and whether non-designer and designer users perceive icon aesthetics similarly to designers. Participants are designers and non-designers-rated and remembered application icons from the two styles using an experimental system we created. The results demonstrated that, even following training, there remained a sizable discrepancy between participants' and designers' assessments of icon design styles. This discrepancy also had an impact on participants' visual search times and accuracy as well as their evaluations of the icons' aesthetic appeal. The results suggest that flat icons are understandable to non-designers and that skeuomorphic icons are just decorative. Skeuomorphic icons were challenging for designers to comprehend and remember. In contrast, participants recognized skeuomorphic icons as more attractive and understood them more quickly than flat icons.
